Washington D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne voted for H.R. 7521, the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, and issued the following statement:

“As Communist China furthers their bold attempts to infiltrate our country, spread propaganda, and spy on American civilians, it is imperative we stand up to their aggressions and protect our national security,” said Congresswoman Van Duyne. “I voted for H.R. 7521 to put an end to the Chinese Communist Party’s disguised surveillance operation and protect Americans' private data from foreign adversaries that wish to annihilate our way of life. Once signed into law, this will force TikTok to choose between continuing to offer its services to Americans or continuing to feed data to the Chinese Communist Party.”

H.R. 7521 passed the House in a vote of 352-65-1.

BACKGROUND:

  • The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act will protect America’s national security by preventing foreign adversaries like China from targeting, surveilling, and manipulating the American public through applications like TikTok.
  • The bill prohibits marketplaces—like app stores and web hosting services—from hosting applications controlled by foreign adversaries of the United States, including the People’s Republic of China. This includes applications like TikTok, which is owned by the Chinese Communist Party-controlled ByteDance.
