Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne (TX-24) introduced a resolution recognizing Social Security as a key pillar of retirement security for tens of millions of Americans and reaffirming the House of Representatives commitment to not cut Social Security.  Similarly, Van Duyne was joined by Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (TX-26) in introducing a second resolution to reaffirm the House’s commitment to save and strengthen Medicare as a vital program for senior health care.

The two resolutions are offered as further measures to ensure good faith negotiations over the upcoming debt ceiling can occur and reach a commonsense resolution later this year.

“House Republicans are united in our solemn commitment to protect and preserve Social Security and Medicare,” said Rep. Van Duyne.  “Despite the divisive rhetoric from the White House and past instances where Democrats have used these programs as slush funds to pay for partisan projects, House Republicans want to assure Americans we are standing with them in protection of Social Security and Medicare.”

“Instead of focusing on protecting and preserving the integrity of the Medicare Program during the 117th Congress, Democrats used the program as their personal rainy day fund to finance a partisan agenda," said Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. "Medicare is an essential program used by more than 64 million Americans. Not ensuring its solvency is legislative malpractice and puts American seniors at risk of not receiving the care they need."

During the 117th Congress, funds meant for Medicare were reallocated to pay for partisan policies outside of the Medicare program in the Inflation Reduction Act – over $289,000,000 was cut from Medicare to provide insurance companies funds in support of Obamacare and to finance green energy projects.
