Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Van Duyne introduced legislation to strengthen enforcement of the Passport Denial Program. H.R. 8193 – The Ensuring Children Receive Support Act – requires the Secretary of State to revoke any U.S. passport issued to an individual exceeding $2,500 in outstanding child support payments.
"The Ensuring Children Receive Support Act is a commonsense bill that will go a long way in safeguarding innocent children from neglect," said Rep. Van Duyne. "I am proud to bring pragmatic solutions to Texas-24 and better support our next generation."
The Passport Denial Program, which targets individuals who choose to not pay child support by revoking their passport, has been extremely successful in the past. In 2017, the program collected $713,878 in outstanding child support payments.
However, the program currently only affects individuals with outstanding payments when they attempt to renew their passport, which can take up to 10 years. The Ensuring Children Receive Support Act would revoke an individual's passport as soon as an he or she exceeds $2,500 in outstanding child support payments.
