Press Releases

Washington, D.C. – The Congressional Institute recently announced that Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne (R-TX-24) and Congresswoman Dina Titus (D-NV-01) were selected to serve as co-chairs of the 43rd Annual Congressional Art Competition, “An Artistic Discovery.”

"I’m honored to join Congresswoman Dina Titus in co-chairing this year’s Congressional Art Competition and encouraging high school students from across the country. I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many talented young North Texas artists through this program, and have thoroughly enjoyed seeing their skills develop over the years. This competition emphasizes the importance of the arts in our community and celebrates the artistic diversity of students, giving them the chance to have their artwork featured in the U.S. Capitol. In a time of such division in Washington, programs such as these are more important than ever. I look forward to partnering with Congresswoman Titus and the Congressional Institute to engage our colleagues in this year’s art competition and celebrate our nation’s phenomenal young artists," said Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne.

“The Congressional Art Competition is an incredible opportunity to recognize talented high school students involved in the arts from around the country. I am honored to join Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne and the Congressional Institute to celebrate the arts which help students express themselves in creative ways while increasing an emotional and social understanding of the world. Each year this competition gives members of Congress the chance to emphasize the importance of the arts and humanities at all levels of education. I applaud the teachers and administrators working to cultivate continued growth of the arts by encouraging the next generation of creative minds, and I look forward to seeing this year’s submissions,” said Congresswoman Dina Titus.

“For 43 years, the Congressional Art Competition has showcased the country’s best artistic talent. Millions of visitors have enjoyed more than 10,000 winning pieces, by high school artists from all over the country, exhibited in the U.S. Capitol. This bipartisan competition was established in 1982, with the Congressional Institute providing advice and logistical support since 2009. The Congressional Institute is delighted to have Rep. Van Duyne and Rep. Titus as this year’s co-chairs, with special thanks to our partnership with Southwest Airlines, which has generously awarded each winner with two tickets to travel to D.C. for the awards ceremony celebration in June. The Congressional Institute joins each Member of Congress who participates in this bipartisan opportunity, in celebrating these high school artists from across the country,” said Kelle Strickland, President and CEO of the Congressional Institute.

BACKGROUND:

The Congressional Art Competition is an officially sanctioned bipartisan event designed to encourage the artistic talents of high school students from across the country as they compete for an opportunity to have their artwork displayed in the heart of the U.S. Capitol, viewed by millions of visitors each year. The competition is sponsored annually by each Member of the U.S. House of Representatives and the Congressional Institute.

Each Congressional office hosts its own competition for high school students in their district using its own criteria. Once a winner is selected, their artwork is displayed for 11 months in the Cannon tunnel that leads into the U.S. Capitol – a path frequented by Members of Congress, staff, and visitors from around the world.
