Rep. Van Duyne Introduces the One Citizen, One Seat Act to Require an Accurate Census Count Based on American Citizenship
October 16, 2025
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Beth Van Duyne (R-TX-24) introduced the One Citizen, One Seat Act to address the disastrous flaws of the 2020 Census and ensure our nation is provided an accurate census count that reflects the number of U.S. citizens in each state. Given the U.S. Census Bureau’s admission that the 2020 Census profoundly undercounted numerous Republican states and overcounted many Democrat states, it is critical for a mid-decade enumeration to be produced so federal funding formulas, based on U.S. citizen counts, can be properly adjusted to support programs that pay for healthcare, housing, education, and roads.
“The egregious failures of the U.S. Census Bureau need to be corrected immediately by publishing an accurate census count based on American citizenship so Congress and the Executive Branch can appropriately direct trillions of dollars of federal spending where they are needed to rightfully serve the interests of the American people. Many Democrat led states were not only overcounted in the 2020 census, but they have been losing hundreds of thousands of American citizen residents in the ensuing years as people flee high tax, high regulation, ideologically insane bastions of Socialism,” said Rep. Van Duyne. “The One Citizen, One Seat Act is not only critical to correct federal funding formulas, but it will also serve as an important reminder of how inaccurate census counting has skewed the apportionment of congressional seats and electors with our Electoral College.”
Summary:
The One Citizen, One Seat Act directs the Secretary of Commerce to revise the tabulation of total population by States for the 2020 Decennial Census to only include American citizens. The One Citizen, One Seat Act would withhold federal grants from States that do not use the revised tabulation for any new purposes involving Census data and grant funding.
